J. K. Rowling debuted with her first novel in 1998 releasing her "children's" tale of Harry, the typical 9 year old dealing with everyday issues as all children of the age of 9 do but he was special in just one way....he was a wizard! That first book, printed initially in the United Kingdom by Bloomsbury and then later in the US by Scholastic under the more Americanized name of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone", "Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone" which was not commercially successful.

In 1999 Rowling released her second novel, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets". This book did not break records either but was certainly more successful with an ever growing, "cult" following of adults as well as children. It seemed that the parents of children were enjoying reading the story to the children as much as the children were enjoying listening. This growing base of support and media attention combined and mushroomed into the world-wide sensation over the release of the third book, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkban".

It was the media that "broke" the story to the non-knowers and they responded to the call making "Prisoner of Azkaban", Rowlings first commercially successful million seller! The book became an adult title, spreading it's popularity onto the other two and resulted in all three titles being on the New York Times bestselling list at the same time. This also created the collectible market for Harry Potter books.

It was then that Bloomsbury also released a UK, Limited or Deluxe edition of all three titles. The entire print run for the first one produced (which was the third Harry Potter title-Prisoner of Azkaban) was only 5,500 copies. These were quickly purchased by readers and collectors alike and the demand became extremely strong. These Deluxe Prisoners now sell for $600 or more each while the previous two titles, but the later produced Deluxe Editions, sell for about $100-$300 each. The original two titles in the commercially released "trade hardback" 1st editions now sell for up to $6,000 for the 1st UK or US "Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone", if you are lucky enough to find one. The second, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" sells for only a $100-$200 and is considered a great investment since books are driven by sales of books by the same author.

Remember, that the value of books depends simply upon supply and demand. Since the earlier titles were produced in smaller quantities and in theory, the demand is equal across-the-board for each title, then the books produced in smaller quantities will always have higher values. The best deal out there - THE UK DELUXED FIRST PRINTINGS! Quantity was very small AND they are truly beautiful books! Watch for the 2nd and 3rd title to really jump now that Rowling has released her 4th title worldwide! The media attention will be incredible as will her book signings.

Rowling has only conducted a few book signings and this has made her signature highly sought after and valuable. When you combine the signature with a 1st printing, you can image the mushrooming effect it has on the value! At booksignings in the US, local booksellers and promoters limited the signings Ms. Rowling would do and completely forbid the signing of UK editions at US signings. This has also led to the scarcity of signed books by Ms. Rowling. Even later printings that are signed are highly sought after collectibles. Something previously unheard of for a book that is only a year or two old. Remember, this book is special.....it appeals to children, parents, readers and collectors. The value of first printings and the investment potential will be increased accordingly.
