JOHN GRISHAM

More than any other author, it was John Grisham who indirectly caused me to begin collecting and trading first printings. My friend David and I were still fairly young and living in Memphis in the early 1980's. It was there and in Oxford, MS that John Grisham was just leaving his career as an attorney and gradually becoming a hit with his breakthrough novel The Firm. Grisham had published a novel previously, but the small publisher Wynwood Press had no commercial success with the novel. It is widely believed that this was due to the lack of experience and budget to truly market a national best seller. Only a few thousand copies of Time to Kill were published, and Grisham purchased most of them back from the publisher for a few dollars each and gave them away as gifts. Those dollar books are now worth thousands!

His second novel The Firm was one of the biggest hits of 1991, spending 47 weeks on The New York Times best seller list. It was made into a major motion picture starring Tom Cruise and a host of other big name Hollywood stars. It was filmed primarily in Memphis, TN where the story takes place and where I was living. As President of the Memphis Jaycees, I was given a cast-signed copy of the novel and I was hooked! The film went on to become one of the biggest hits of 1993 and my collecting days started with a bang.

Americans may say they hate slick lawyers, but they sure love to read about them as Grisham's novels have been translated into 31 languages. In fact, lawyers themselves make up a very large base of support for Grisham's readership. At home in Virginia, but still maintaining a residence in Oxford, life is easy and yet hard. Never liking the idea of being a celebrity, Grisham rarely signs his books publicly, making them treasured pieces in anyone's collection. John Grisham now coaches Little League, spending lots of time with his young son.

We are proud to offer FLATSIGNED titles of many John Grisham books! Some are first printings!
